Dear Friends of the Belgrade Lakes,
Thanks to you and the teamwork of many people, the Belgrade Lakes Association (BLA) has enjoyed ONE HUNDRED YEARS of committed support. We are grateful for the dedication and participation of every donor and volunteer and are deeply proud of the long-lasting ties represented by our history.
In 1908, we used to put out and remove flags that marked the lake rocks. Today, we face the enormous challenge of declining lake water quality. We have only recently learned that this unwelcome condition is the result of our own ignorance about lakes and indifference to the consequences of our actions. We have met the enemy, and it is us!
Despite the difficulties, we believe our lakes can be saved. Accomplishing the task will take time, money, and work. For 2008, the BLA Water Quality Committee’s budget, by itself, is $83,000, an increase of $50,000, needed to meet the immediate threat of Gloeotrichia’s green bloom and to effect remediation (please see enclosed technical information). If all of us who live, work, and have businesses in our area collaborate, the BLA hopes to achieve the goal of healthy water by 2026.
So, what should you do? Please treat your lakes and surrounding land with the utmost care, and renew your membership in the BLA at the highest level you can afford.
Sincerely yours,
Polly Parkhill Beatie
